DISCLAIMER: Everyone has different styles, this is my personal opinion for Instagram photos and is not the end all be all. Some people make different things look better than others. so take that into account when reading this.

There are several known aspects of a scene of art that please the eye. Lines, colors, poses, etc. If you aren't trained to identify those features when taking a photo, whatever you are wanting to capture may not look the way you may want it do. Instagram is all about be aesthetic. Contrast, color coordination, light, quality capture - things most every photo needs prior to taking it. Themes/Coloring Lots of people try to use pre-made filters and get a theme (theme: when all your photos on your feed look similar) sometimes making a theme is hard, being either the filter youre using just looks tacky, or your photos are too different to use a filter. Take this example; my hair is red, so in every photo there will be red. Red is warm toned(or at least my red is.) So if i use a filter that is cool toned (blue) it will clash with my hair. It is still do-able and sometimes looks good but the theme over all should look similar. If I keep them all one undertone they'll match more successfully. You'll notice the good photographers make their pictures look like it's from a professional camera and not heavily edited fro an iPhone... If you up the saturation so much that your skin looks red then it's pretty obvious that you edited your photo.. Natural beauty is the best. If you want to go the more other route, the app VSCO is where most people go to make a filter for their photos. My favorite app is called Lightroom, which is free on the App Store. use it to create a custom filter that matches me, apply it to me photos, but the also tweak it to each individual one. I also use Picsart are general photoshop needs. Once you edit your photos you can put them into the app Preview to see what your feed will look like once you've posted them. Lines/Blurring If you take a photo of a landscape, somewhere outside where there's a horizon or basically where there's lines - you always want to make sure they are straight. Slanted lines can be fun but for the most part they just aren't all that professional if that's what you are going for. When you go to someone's profile on instagram you'll see the grid lines between their photos. If you take a picture where the lines are slanted it disrupts the natural flow of your eye gaze. You can edit the oriantion or angle of the photo in the Instagram app. If you ever take a portrait of someone, unless the background is important to the context of the picture try to SLIGHTLY blur out the background. Lots of apps do this my favorite is picsart all you do is open your prefured photo in the app select effects then click blur and then just erase. I keep my blur at 100% until I'm done drawing 'cause it's easier to see where I've drawn. Then once I've marked where I want the blur I set it down to 1-4% blur so it looks more natural. The app takes some figuring out to do but once you use it for a while you'll use it for everything to photoshop. It's THAT good. Posing It really depends on what kind of picture you're taking. Cutesy photos are usually the best because too many "hot" or angsty photos get irritating after a while. Don't purse your lips, people can almost always tell. Tilting your head usually looks awkward unless you are doing it on purpose. Just make sure your body is loose and relaxed... Or at least looks like it... Posture is so-so-so important in pictures. Shoulders back n down, jaw propped and back slightly arched if you have a tendency to hunch over. It takes a while to practice poses before you know what looks good on your body. I'm tall and lanky so if I put my foot out they look longer, same with lower angles. so I try to get more neutral to low angles. If you want to look taller, lower angles might really work for you. And vis versa for shorter/higher angles. Pictures that get the most likes: Pictures with friends, with pets, smiling bright, pretty backgrounds, nice outfits, cute props, angles that flatter you. Pictures that get the least likes: Low resolution photos, (most) selflies, bad lighting, items like food(unless you're a food account), most pictures that don't include you(some scenery is cute but for the most part people like to see your face), and same pose in multiple photos. Remember that likes are not everything. If there is a photo or memory you really love, just post it because it makes YOU happy. Key elements for good pictures Good clear lighting, pretty colors or solid theme, sharp image, blurred background. It takes some time experimenting to see what your followers like. Mine seem to like sharp portrait photos with pretty backgrounds. If you don't like to post what your followers want, that's fine. Instagram is about you, not about followers, likes or popularity. I personally enjoy the challenge of getting a photo that both I and my friends think is pretty. It's all in good fun. Good luck!!
